چکیده

A cake is a metaphor for a heterogeneous, divisible good, such as land. A perfect division of cake is efficient (also called Pareto-optimal), envyfree, and equitable. We give an example of a cake in which it is impossible to divide it among three players such that these three properties are satisfied, however many cuts are made. It turns out that two of the three properties can be satisfied by a 3-cut and a 4-cut division, which raises the question of whether the 3-cut division, which is not efficient, or the 4-cut division, which is not envy-free, is more desirable (a 2-cut division can at best satisfy either envy-freeness or equitability but not both). We prove that no perfect division exists for more than 4 cuts and for an extension of this example to more than three players.

BetterWays to Cut a Cake

I n this paper we show how mathematics can illuminate the study of cake-cutting in ways that have practical implications. Specifically, we analyze cake-cutting algorithms that use a minimal number of cuts (n − 1 if there are n people), where a cake is a metaphor for a heterogeneous, divisible good, whose parts may be valued differently by different people. These algorithms not only establish th...

Exact Procedures for Envy-free Chore Division

We develop the rst explicit procedures for exact envy-free chore division for 4 or more players. We also give a simple 3-person procedure. Our 4-person moving-knife scheme and n-person discrete algorithm are accomplished by exploiting a notion of \irrevocable advantage" for chores, and are motivated by similar solutions for cake-cutting by Brams, Taylor, and Zwicker. We discuss the diierences b...

N-person Envy-free Chore Division

In this paper we consider the problem of chore division, which is closely related to a classical question, due to Steinhaus [7], of how to cut a cake fairly. We focus on constructive solutions, i.e., those obtained via a well-defined procedure or algorithm. Among the many notions of fairness is envy-freeness: an envy-free cake division is a set of cuts and an allocation of the pieces that gives...

Envy-free Chore Division for An Arbitrary Number of Agents

Chore division, introduced by Gardner in 1970s [10], is the problem of fairly dividing a chore among n different agents. In particular, in an envy-free chore division, we would like to divide a negatively valued heterogeneous object among a number of agents who have different valuations for different parts of the object, such that no agent envies another agent. It is the dual variant of the cel...

Divide-and-Conquer: A Proportional, Minimal-Envy Cake-Cutting Algorithm

We analyze a class of proportional cake-cutting algorithms that use a minimal number of cuts (n − 1 if there are n players) to divide a cake that the players value along one dimension. While these algorithms may not produce an envy-free or efficient allocation—as these terms are used in the fair-division literature—one, divide-and-conquer (D&C), minimizes the maximum number of players that any ...
